Introduction

Novaseeker asked me a question a while back.  He wrote,

“Since you’re in Asia, here’s a question about this issue relating to that culture.

The image in the post that is referenced in this specific sub-discussion is from a 2020 video game created in Poland called “Cyberpunk 2077”.  I don’t play games, but in searching for that image I came across a number of other ones, including many from Asian-made video games — Japanese and Korean mostly — featuring similarly “kick-ass” female hotties-with-guns as power/sex symbols for what I assume are mostly male players.  Especially some of the Korean ones seemed to be extremely sexualized/feminine in appearance yet doing very “powerful”/masculine actions (as you would expect in a video game I suppose).  I thought that even in Korea and Japan, which are more West-influenced than some other Asian countries, the norm was still feminine women — in other words, the “kickass woman with sexual authority, too!” arises from Western feminist culture.  It appears that this also is a common trope in cultures like at least Korea which, while probably considered off the charts feminist for Asia are not particularly feminist from an American or European point of view.  Why has this happened there as well?

I mean I realize gamers everywhere are lame and passive and tend to prefer “dominant woman” stereotypes — is that all there is to it, and it has very little to do with the ambient cultural feminism, which is clearly very different in Korea than it is in California? It’s a puzzle to me, given how other aspects of Asian culture don’t mesh with it.”

In response to NovaSeeker’s question, I did a little research on this topic.  The rest of this post will cover the history, the artistic design, and the cultural context of the sexy, kick-@ss female stereotype in comics, anime, and video games.

On the History

I read some articles about this phenomenon (originally written in Chinese), and gathered up a bit of the rather long history that goes back 50 years or more.

Female heroine characters in the arts and literature date back to antiquity.  But in the area of comics and video games, it seems the sexy kickass woman was inspired by Marvel comics’ Red Sonja, which first appeared in 1973.  The Red Sonja character, and similar characters have reappeared in many comics since then, and later was made into a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Red Sonja

It is generally believed that the bikini armor first appeared in anime the early 1980s in “Fortune Star Boy”.  In this manga, the author, Rumiko Takahashi, had only a hazy concept of bikini armor and did not emphasize the concept, so it did not receive widespread attention.

Then, in 1985, the Japanese anime film, Leda: The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko,* featured a female high school student, Yoko Asagiri, who was transformed into a female warrior (see next image).  Of note, Yoko Asagiri’s bright red hair clearly reflects the image of Red Sonja.  During the plot, she was swallowed by a flower while being chased by someone.  When the flower spit her out, she was wearing a bikini which somewhat resembled armor (e.g. shoulder pads, shin guards).  Asagiri instantly transforms into a female warrior and she defeats her enemy.  The bikini armor gained popularity after this anime, probably because the bikini armor was the only fixed equipment of the heroine.

Also in 1985, on the other side of the world, Richard Fletcher made a movie, “Queen Excalibur”, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was directly modeled after Marvel’s, Red Sonja.

In 1986, there was a game called “Dream Warrior” that used bikini armor as its signature feature, further consolidating the popularity of bikini armor.

Another game released in 1988, “Dragon Quest”, featured a heroine in iconic red bikini armor.

In 1994, the game, “The Elder Scrolls: Arena”, had female characters wearing bikini armor, but the clothing was more bikini than armor.

From this time on, generations of artists continued to create aggressive female characters wearing bikini armor on the basis of their predecessors.  Bikini armor slowly evolved to be more beautiful, sexually alluring, and (somewhat) more functional as armor.

* Leda is not to be confused with another, Tenya Lida (Japanese: Tensei Ida) AKA “Ingenium”.

On the Artistic Design

From the writers’/designers’ standpoint, a character can wear anything he chooses.  So the final decision about what specific types of clothing to attach to the characters all depends on what the audience likes, what creates visual and mythical appeal, and what will sell. Therefore, in any specific application, what the heroine wears mainly depends on the setting and other attributes of the anime or game.

For example, “The Sakura Magic Girls” mimics a combination of cartomancy and a Victoria’s Secrets style fashion show, so the clothing is mostly based on the sex studded Lolita style.  Another example is “Star vs. the Forces of Evil”, in which the main character, Star Butterfly, is modeled after the butterfly/fairy personification*, which appeals to both eastern and western fantasy.  A third ubiquitous example, which brings us back to the topic of discussion, is the iconic female warrior.

One source speculated that the concept of female warriors and bikini armor originated in the gladiator culture of ancient Rome.  Gladiator fights are essentially entertainment for others.  In order to enhance the presentation, gladiators showcased their physique, as well as their fighting skills.  Thus, male gladiators streamlined their armor and female gladiators wore minimal clothing.

However, it was pointed out that wearing armor on the breasts has little benefit if the rest of the body, especially the abdomen, is exposed.

So the writers/designers came up with a rule of thumb that supports the use of less clothing: “The more exposed, the stronger the combat effectiveness”.  They had to come up with several explanations of how this could be true, and make the character depictions match this reasoning in order to produce an overall mythos that was convincing and believable (within the intrinsic suspension of disbelief necessary for one to engage in the fantasy).

Ayame, a Magic Sakura Girl

One reasoning is that female warriors should not wear heavy, burdensome armor, as that would slow them down.

Another line of reasoning claims that the primary source of defense is mainly derived from magic, speed, or a special skill or technique, rather than brute crushing strength.

In addition, the sexual authority of this type of character plays into the overall power of the character, that is, cleavage and lots of skin have the effect of distracting and confusing a male adversary and thereby weakening him.

Another work around is that some female characters are designed to avoid direct confrontation, such as a sorceress, sniper or bowman.

The authors state that these sexy characters were intentionally designed to appeal to a male audience, and yes, the kinds of guys who are into comics and video games tend to be attracted to dominant women.  Thus, the bikini armor is just for visual appeal to male viewers.  However, these characters also appeal to pre-adolescent girls too, as it is seen by them as a role model of sorts.

Being good-looking is a qualifying trait for any woman, whether she be the girl next door or the heroine of a fantasy, and this is a consistently enduring, standard fare for comics, games, and anime.

* For comparison, the butterfly/fairy personification has also morphed into butterfly armor, which continues to make reappearances from time to time, most recently in “Monster Hunter”.

On the Cultural Context

So far, I’ve only discussed the archetype of the female warrior within comics, games and anime, but NovaSeeker’s question was more focused on its cultural affect.

One source said that this type of character is a representation of the feminist “Strong Independent Woman” archetype.  Another author said that western feminism is trying to kill this type of portrayal of women, because it objectifies women’s sexuality.  So the reaction is a mixed bag, which I think reflects the inherent confusion in feminism.

Butterfly armor, as it appears in Monster Hunter.

Overall, I would say that ultimately, the comic and video game industries are businesses that try to produce content that will sell, and the sexy kickass woman archetype definitely sells to teenage males.  It is charming.  It appeals to their curiosity and desires.  It conveys “heroine psychology” (which is seen as a mysterious anomaly).  It transports them to an ancient, distant world which has different norms and rules of engagement.  However, it is a microculture of fantasy.  Outside of this targeted demographic, these characters are not popular at all.

Another thing that plays into the cultural interpretation of this, I think, is how different cultures regard the archetypal mythos of the knight who rescues the princess.  According to western chivalry, the knight does this out of a sense of honor, cultural preservation, and because it is the right thing to do.  Asian audiences read this type of story and see through all the talk about honor as mere posture posing.  It is tacitly understood that the real motivation is for him to have the woman, and everything that entails.  But again, all of this is regarded as archetypal mythos — stories that convey the basic nature of men and women.  When men and women actually behave like the mythos, in Asia, it is usually seen as playacting or being over the top.  The exception would be when it is done in a truly dangerous situation that would require true courage and bravery.

Had been thinking about this “guys into anime girls” thing recently. I use to read a political blog where the guy posted anime girls and Robert Stacy McCain does this. I dont get it. It does literally nothing for me. My hindbrain knows it’s not a real girl I guess. Like the “sex doll” thing. It’s easy not to look at cartoon girls. It’s hard eg not to look at gray dress girl from that post you made a couple months ago.

My dad had a collection of Frank Frazetta fantasy art when I was a kids – lots of buxom babes. Wasnt tempted to look at it. He got rid of it when we started going to church.

I’m with you. Don’t know anyone who is in to this stuff, or at least no one who would admit it. Its dungeons and dragons/choose your own adventure fetish + cartoon chicks with big b00bs and guns (and broadswords).

In high school, I found myself at a party with a bunch of these dudes–they were watching the animated rock movie “Heavy Metal” and it was pathetic watching them quote the lines. They were the guys who hung out in the smoking area and tried to look like Motley Crue. The very few girls that hung out with them were gross.

Sorry if anyone here came from that crowd. But its kind of where things went off the rails for you.

The field of biblical scholarship has become deeply polluted with theological modernism in the last two centuries. Theological rationalism spread like ivy, the growth stages of which have been described as sleeping, creeping, and leaping. That is what happened with modernism. It was planted in the 18th century and slept for a time. It began to creep in the early 19th century; and from the middle to the end of that century it leaped across the Christian landscape. By the end of the 19th century it was so well entrenched in high places of Christian scholarship in British Protestant and Baptist denominations that it was able to win the day. Not only were many scholars themselves afflicted with modernistic views of the Bible, but a vast number of others, not themselves modernistic in theology, were nonetheless too spiritually weak to resist modernism boldly. Instead, they were quite willing to work hand-in-hand with the modernists, ignoring God’s warnings, “evil communications corrupt good manners” and “a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.”
Consider the Brown, Driver, Briggs Hebrew-English Lexicon, which is a product of this apostasy.
    a. Brown was president of the liberal Union Theological Seminary in New York City. After graduating from Union in 1877 he studied in Berlin and then began his teaching career at Union in 1879. He was appointed Davenport Professor of Hebrew and the Cognate Languages in 1890, and in 1908 he succeeded Charles Cuthbert Hall (1852-1908) as president of Union.
FRANCIS BROWN (1849-c. 1917). He was awarded honorary degrees from the universities of Glasgow, Oxford, Dartmouth, and Yale.

    b. Together with Charles Briggs and S.R. Driver, Brown produced a revision of the Hebrew lexicon compiled by F.H.W. Genenius. The Brown, Driver, and Briggs Hebrew English Lexicon (also called A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament: with an Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic) is based on the Lexicon of William Gesenius (known as “the father of modern Hebrew lexicography”) as translated by Edward Robinson and has wielded vast influence in biblical studies in spite of the rank modernism of its authors.

    c. Brown was a modernist in his approach to the Bible. As president of Union in the early 20th century, Brown oversaw one of deepest cesspools of unbelief in America.

    (1) Brown supported his friend and co-laborer Charles Briggs when he tore apart the Bible in his inaugural speech at Union in January 1891, upon his appointment to the chair of Biblical Theology. In that address, misnamed “The Authority of the Holy Scripture,” Briggs proposed that the Bible was only one of three “great fountains of divine authority,” the other two being the Church and Human Reason. He questioned the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch and one-Isaiah authorship of Isaiah. He questioned the Bible’s miracles. He claimed that the doctrines of verbal inspiration and inerrancy were two of the “barriers” that hindered a proper approach to the Bible. Another alleged barrier was “minute prediction,” and under this point Briggs attacked Scripture’s predictive prophecy. Francis Brown stood unhesitatingly with the heretic Briggs because he was likeminded in unbelief.

    (2) Brown had a close relationship with another heretic who was condemned by the Presbyterian Church. This was A.C. MCGIFFERT (1861-1933), who was co-author with Brown of The Christian Point of View (1902). While McGiffert was a professor at Lane Seminary in Pennsylvania, fellow professor Henry Preserved Smith was tried for heresy. McGiffert testified in Smith’s defense in 1892. (Smith was found guilty and suspended.) McGiffert had also supported Charles Briggs in his trial at about that same time. When McGiffert moved to Union Seminary, where his liberal views were welcomed, his inaugural address was described as “a direct onslaught on the very basis of Protestant theology.” In 1897, McGiffert publicized his heresy in A History of Christianity in the Apostolic Age, in which he denied the supernatural inspiration of Scripture and “questioned the genuineness of half the books in the New Testament.” McGiffert claimed that all Christian teaching is relative, that “there is no such thing as Christianity in general,” implied that the Lord Jesus was mistaken in some of his views, and denied that early Christians held the doctrine of the substitutionary atonement. The next year, the Presbyterian Church’s General Assembly asked McGiffert to reconsider his views and conform to the doctrines of the church or to withdraw. McGiffert responded in 1899 with a brazen article in which he denied any church’s right to define or enforce orthodox doctrine. The New York Presbytery passed a resolution condemning McGiffert’s opinions, and he resigned from the Presbyterian Church in 1900. He joined the Congregational Church and succeeded his fellow liberal and co-laborer Francis Brown as president of Union (from 1917 to 1926).

    SAMUEL ROLLES DRIVER (1846-1914)

    a. Driver was an influential Hebrew scholar and textual critic. He was Regius Professor of Hebrew, and Canon of Christ Church, Oxford. From 1876 to 1884 he was a member of the Old Testament translation committee for the English Revised Version. He authored Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament (1891) and collaborated with Charles Briggs and Francis Brown in a revision of the Hebrew lexicon compiled by F.H.W. Genenius. The Brown, Driver, and Briggs Hebrew English Lexicon (also called A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament: with an Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic, Based on the Lexicon of William Gesenius as translated by Edward Robinson) has wielded vast influence in biblical studies in spite of the rank modernism of its authors.

    b. Driver’s theological modernism was evident in his writings. The Briggs and Driver Hebrew lexicon is founded upon the unbelieving, Christ-denying J.E.D.P. theory of Old Testament interpretation. (Briggs was convicted of heresy and dismissed from the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.)

    (1) Driver used his pen to fight against men who defended the historicity and infallibility of Scripture, such as Professor James Robertson of Glasgow (McDonald, Theories of Revelation: Historical Studies 1860-1960, p. 120).

    (2) In 1911, Driver collaborated with A.F. Kirkpatrick on The Higher Criticism, concluding that the Old Testament was the product of natural rather than supernatural forces. In this book Driver “scorns the idea of verbal inspiration and contends that the process of inspiration did not assure freedom from ‘imperfection, error, and mistake in matters of fact’” (McDonald, Theories of Revelation, pp. 238, 239).

    (3) “The Bible is a ‘library,’ showing how men variously gifted by the Spirit of God cast the truth which they received into many different literary forms, as GENIUS PERMITTED or occasion demanded” (S.R. Driver, An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament, 1956, p. ix). This is a complete denial that the Bible writers wrote under divine inspiration.

    (4) “None of the historians of the Bible claim supernatural enlightenment for the materials of their narrative. … in many parts of these books we have before us TRADITIONS, in which the original representation has been insensibly MODIFIED, and sometimes (especially in the later books) COLOURED BY THE ASSOCIATIONS OF THE AGE IN WHICH THE AUTHOR RECORDING IT LIVED … some freedom was used by ancient historians in placing speeches or discourses in the mouths of historical characters” (Driver, An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament, pp. x, xi). Thus Driver even claimed that the Bible writers doctored historical records.

    (5) “[CHRIST] ACCEPTED, AS THE BASIS OF HIS TEACHING, THE OPINIONS RESPECTING THE OLD TESTAMENT CURRENT AROUND HIM: He assumed, in His allusions to it, the premises which His opponents recognised, and which could not have been questioned (even had it been necessary to question them) without raising issues for which the time was not yet ripe, and which, had they been raised, would have interfered seriously with the paramount purpose of His life” (Driver, An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament, p. xii). Thus, according to Driver, the Lord Jesus Christ, Truth incarnate, stated things that He knew were wrong.

    (6) “The consensus of so many acute and able [critical] scholars, of different countries, of different communions, trained independently in different schools, and approaching the subject with different theological and intellectual prepossessions, cannot, as some would have us believe, rest upon illusion” (Driver, An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament, p. xvii). The deluded Bible scholar thought that the majority opinion in scholarship must be right and ignored the Scripture’s warnings about Satan’s activities and end-time apostasy (e.g., 2 Corinthians 11:1-15; 1 Tim. 4:1-6; 2 Tim. 3:13; 4;3-4; 2 Pet. 3; Jude).

    (7) “The Book [of Job] cannot be the record of an actual history. … it is reasonable to suppose that the poet built upon materials handed down to him by tradition, as other dramatists have often done, the Greek tragedians, for instance, and Shakespeare” (Driver, The Book of Job in the Revised Version, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1908, pp. x, xi).

    CHARLES AUGUSTUS BRIGGS (1841-1913)

    a. Briggs was a professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and the co-author (with Francis Brown and Samuel Rolles Driver) of the Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (completed 1906). The Brown, Driver, and Briggs Hebrew English Lexicon (also called A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament: with an Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic) is based on the Lexicon of William Gesenius as translated by Edward Robinson and has wielded vast influence in biblical studies in spite of the rank modernism of its authors.

    b. Briggs was a theological modernist. In fact, he was defrocked by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. because of his liberal views of the Bible.

    (1) In November 1890, Briggs was appointed to the Edward Robinson Chair of Biblical Theology at Union.

    (2) On January 20, 1891, Briggs delivered his inaugural address entitled “The Authority of the Holy Scripture.” It was a bold assault upon the Bible. He proposed three “great fountains of divine authority” — the Bible, the Church, and Human Reason; thus denying that the Bible is the sole authority for faith and practice.

    (3) Briggs was charged with heresy and in June 1893 the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church found Briggs guilty and suspended him from the ministry.

    (4) Standing behind their heretic 100%, Union Seminary declared its independence from the mother denomination, and Briggs stayed on as Professor of Biblical Theology.

    (5) In 1899 Briggs was received into the ministry of the Episcopal Church in America.

      ProfGBFM,
A few of your recent comments have been laboriously long and time consuming to wade through. They are so off topic that it is unclear how it relates to either the post or the discussion. Your consistent use of poor spelling and punctuation makes it unbearable. I got about half way through and gave up trying to make sense of it.

So here I need to review some basic standards for quality commenting which have been arduously neglected.

If you bring up another subject, then it should be presented in such a way that it augments the discussion on the present topic, instead of making readers tired and confused.

If you cite text from another blog or comment, then please include a link for our reference and make an effort to tie it into the topic at hand.

If you pose accusations against noteworthy figures (e.g. Dalrock, Vox, Mohler, etc.), please provide evidence to back up your claim, and grant us the grace to explain why you believe the person is in the wrong. (BTW, do any of our readers take Mohler seriously anymore?)

If your comment surpasses 700 words and encompasses a complete idea, then I kindly suggest for you to submit a guest post. If you should choose to do so, a higher standard of writing will be required.

Random blathering profanity is not acceptable, and will be edited or deleted. Profanity that is used to make an excellent point more explicitly livid may receive a pass. Remember that this is a Christian blog. As such, our speech should be educational, informative, insightful, inspiring, encouraging, and uplifting. Heartistian speech must be as trenchant as Roissy.

Since you are a long time participant in the Manosphere and are well respected by many of our readers, I challenge you to hold yourself to your long standard of excellence. I know you can do better.

Thank you for reading Σ Frame!

    Simple explanation:

Men want to look at sexy, scantily clad women.
Stories with protagonists that are traditionally feminine don’t usually appeal to men.
Stories that appeal to men will, by default, have an aggressive protagonist that kicks @$$.

Men want media where a woman in a chainmail bikini is constantly “on-screen”. They also want action stories with @$$-kicking protagonists. Hence, the enduring appeal of Red Sonja.

There’s an old saying among video game players who play as female characters: if I have to stare at a characters’ @$$ for hours and hours, then it may as well be an @$$ I’ll enjoy staring at.

This is the part is weird to me. Why not just have male protagonists that kick a$$ then? Kick a$$ girl characters ruin most movies and other story lines for me.

Even the mildly “kick a$$” scenes like in Aleins, where Corporal Hicks is teaching Ripley how to handle the pulse rifle, and she says “I can handle myself” and he responds “yeah, I noticed” makes me roll my eyes.

The Vasquez character was a little much. But the interesting thing about Aliens is that Ripley isn’t there to be sexy and that her whole story arc is about motherhood, in other words the most feminine thing you can think of.

For most of the film she doesn’t go around blasting the Aliens and serves as the level-headed parental figure when the team’s leadership gets killed or panics. It’s only at the climax that she turns into an action hero and that’s because her surrogate daughter is threatened. Threatened by a giant alien who is herself a mother, I might add…

Between Aliens and Terminator 2 James Cameron has a thing for motherhood themes.

Based Japan will not cater to American lefties. Not yet.

In anime, these are tropes. And it’s fantasy.

There’s a reason why a common trope in anime is a hyper aggressive female warrior who becomes a total doll for the protagonist.

Also, literally every one will feature a buxom character in a rivalry with a flat chested character.

It’s funny. It’s a gimmick. It’s not meant to taken as a desire to become real.

However, in the event I am isekai’d to another reality, I reserve the right to change my opinion.

    So, a couple of things:

I am a guy who likes anime and I don’t feel bad or embarrassed by it at all. Men like art, men like good looking women, anime or manga of good looking women meets those criteria. Would I prefer anime girls over real girls? Hell no. But well done animation or art is still eye candy, and there’s nothing wrong with that, per se. Naturally any man who become obsessed with anime characters to the point of preferring them over real girls, and, yes, that is a thing, has issues. I’m down with people having anime character figures on their shelves, but personally I draw the line at moronic things like anime girl pillow cases or those awful “boob mousepads”.
So long as men have thought up stories of heroic people those stories have included both men and women. However, as I said in my other post, “Why the Meme doesn’t Work” (https://snappertrx.wordpress.com/2016/04/07/why-the-meme-doesnt-work/), the trope has been played out to its extreme. Men love a strong, sexy warrior woman, but not when EVERYONE is a strong, sexy warrior woman. In the past such tropes were few and far between. Red Sonja was a warrior woman in a mans world. An oddity, and as such things go, scarcity increases value. Now every book, show or game has to have a PLETHORA of warrior women and men are tired of them. Not only are they everywhere but the mystery has been removed from them. No longer is Red Sonja an oddity because she is one woman in a million who can handle a sword and battle as well as any man, now the fantasy realms are full of Red Sonja. And, as such things go, flooding the market has decreased the value and exasperated men.

Where Japanese anime and manga have the market cornered is that their warrior women tend to still look like and act like women. In the post linked to, “What Men Want’, the female protagonist of the story is a very powerful vampire, capable of besting the strongest of monsters with ease, but she still retains the innocence of a young girl head over heels for the boy she has feelings for. Not EVERY anime treats its warrior women as such, but many do. This appeals to men because they still get to see scantily clad women carrying large swords performing incredible feats of combat on one page, and on the next page that same woman is making her man a meal and fussing over spiders.

Its simple entertainment, but like most simple things in this world, a lot of people have gone too far off into the deep end, and those people get all the attention. I guarantee for every one weeb out there showing off his anime girl pillow and photoshopping her into lonely pictures of himself at various locales (yes, that’s a thing) there are a hundred or even a thousand men who just like anime without all the weirdness.

In HS I bought or rented half a dozen VHS anime tapes (it was very obscure at that time in the early 90s). Only one I remember was Ninja Scroll. I thought the ultra violence was cool – nothing like that in america.

I dont understand why e.g. Stacy McCain posts it – why not just post real chicks. I’m not an artist – maybe that’s why I dont get it.

Ninja Scroll was a great film. Still one of my favorites.

I love my carbine! I converted it to a bullpup and, though the trigger is very squishy, the entire dynamics of the gun changed. Much more balanced and it looks cool. Still hitting laptop hard drives using my red dot alone, but haven’t been out for practice in months due to not being able to find .40 ammo anywhere.

Will eventually build an AR-10 chambered in 7.62, or possibly buy the uber sexy Zastava Arms ZPAP M70 AK, but that’s nothing I’m really considering until after I determine if I am moving to the East coast.

Its always been on my radar, but its one of those films that I think, “Hey, I should watch that”, but I forget by the end of the work day and don’t think about it again until someone reminds me. Thanks to technology, however, I am going to set myself a reminder to watch it this weekend now that you have mentioned it.

Well heres an article that has my interest in putting down a comment.

I happen to be a big anime fan, so much so that I do panels for conventions, work on AMV’s, talk to buddies I do a podcast with about anime, collect far more DVD’s and other anime media that i’m not sure I can ever watch, and I also work in the industry.

The main reason I see the girls in bikinis to add on to Snapper comment is its targeted to males because they want to see something nice kicking butt. Not that men don’t appreciate other men doing the same thing (Berserk is a great series, utterly barbaric in the violence, definetly check it out if you can), but in the end its fantasy and its made to be fun. There are other instances of the playboy bunny costume being used which has been an image staple for the company GAINAX over the years since they did their fan animation shorts for the Daicon conventions in Japan in the early 1980’s.

Two of my top favorite anime OVA/series would be Sol Bianca and Bubblegum Crisis. Both of which contain women that do kick butt. I don’t see it to be a totally pro feminist type of anime, and im surprised that feminist aren’t jumping on those series as their catalyst that theres an anime made for them. I just see it as the creators made something they wanted to make because they wanted too. I enjoy them because of the stories, characters and plot because I believe they are really well done. It’s more of a cool factor. In terms of sexuality they are probably the least in sexual content, so there is limited “fan service” shown.

Japan is very traditional in terms of gender roles for the most part, and it is complicated to say that due to more women in the workplace and men not making more than the women, which seems to lead to lower marriage and birth rates. That is something they’re gonna have to figure out on their own. But they are against westernized feminism, they don’t want to bow to it in how crackers from across the Pacific should dictate what they make. Western anime fans can either take it or leave it with the way the culture is progressing. Im all for creators making what they want without the fanbase dictating how they should make to what they want.

The only way anime bikini girls become somewhat problematic is when its now used for marketing reasons for its male audience they wanna reach. A bikini girl once in a while is fine, but when you have to add 5 to the 6 females in a series in order for it to “do well” when the story is lackluster and recycled at best, then I take issue with that. But hey, I didn’t fund the darn thing, so my opinion on that only goes so far.

Played AD&D in jr high and high school. It was okay. Wasn’t hard core or anything like that. I entered college and “Robotech” was just starting to have its moment I guess…..eh, it was a changing time for me.

By the time I was 16 / 17 I was liking clothing, music, going to shows concerts….kind of just drifted from it. Earlier in my teens…surreal……here I was thirteen and not kid, not an adult…and not really a teen yet…would still bust out my Legos at times at that age….would still get up early on a Saturday morning back then and watch cartoons before chores around the house, went hiking and camping….but would go roller skating (was a big deal in my area well into the 1980’s where I grew up). Played baseball in summer with the community……just a surreal time. Dad being out of work most of 1982 (82 recession). Awkward time. Your peers who were good friends the year before “suddenly” were not. Many boys at that time my age (12/13) were already making out with girls….or had been drunk….and I was still playing with Legos. Just a strange time for a boy. Any boy. Must be worse today, at least back then one could just “disappear” after school.

I like the original Star Trek, did watch “Next Generation” here and there. Picard was a Frenchman with a Brit accent. Strange world the next generation was…….

  6. As someone who was into it and now not into it but still has a bunch of friends into it, I can tell you it’s probably mostly the reciprocal rule. Physical attraction aside (e.g. skimpy beautiful women), the masculine attracts the feminine and the feminine attracts the masculine. As a former mama’s boy I was into it, but after I started taking my faith seriously and understanding that I was supposed to be the masculine head of my family I started to be more repulsed to that type of stuff.

The more femininzed a man is the more they tend to be attracted to to a masculine woman such as these kickass women. The typical tradcon father wanting all their daughters to be kickass is also probably because they are playing the feminized role in their marriage while their wife is probably in the masculine role.

The masculine-feminine dynamic is generally a proxy for the regular headship-submission and love-respect paradigm. If the man is more feminized, it’s more likely that he’ll take on the feminine characteristics and want women that take the inverted role position instead of being the head himself.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Red Sonja started in the early 1970s when the grrrrl power movement started and progressively these things have become more popular as women have become more masculinized and men have become more feminized.

Obviously, these are generalizations, but the generalizations seem to fit the data, at least in my observations.

I remember in 1997…when I still was a “Rolling Stone” subscription holder…..A then ‘barely legal Britany Spears had a photo spread…..the “new” Madonna I guess….the article was eh…okay I guess……from what I can remember. The pictures. Licking lollipops, very sexually suggestive, she looked like she was in heat….just the whole thing gave me the creeps and made me feel a little “dirty” I guess. It harmless right? She’s a teen star…so what? All the girls dress like today!

Me, as a single man back then as well. if “I” had taken pictures of a girl like that I would have been arrested. Let’s say “I” had pictures like this in my personal possession….and I even knew at that time (1997) I could be labeled a pervert, a creep, disgusting, dirty guy….

But since it was in “Rolling Stone” it was okay.

I don’t know this anime culture at all. My one young cousin in the late 1990’s loved “Sailor Moon” and “Power Puff Girls”. My other cousin collected Pokemon Cards (and still does). It would be like trying to explain my Mod sensibilities to a late teen boy. He just won’t get it,

It’s very big, as are video games. The problem comes from church leaders from my generation or older saying its “childish” and if it really is?????????

They don’t seem to have a problem with big breasted girls looking like their high on cocain while being rattled hentai style by horny aliens or monsters or weird looking aimee guys.

It’s just something I don’t get. If I was a parent I would be monitoring it, asking questions…..and guiding hopefully in ways that could be productive or proactive. I don’t know.

Debbie never married probably for the fact of a few things:

She was “wholesome” and she held on to that even when the pop scene changed by the early 1990’s. She didn’t suddenly twerk, get tattoos and become a drunk front girl for a band. I think she realized by 1990…..the pop-music torch was passing / changing, and it was “totally okay with her”

She also wrote many of her own songs back then. She can play piano……she was more than just a “teen mall-girl pop star” but we just didn’t know it. She mentioned in an interview in the late 1990’s or thereabouts she had a lot anxiety in her late teens when she was a star.

I honestly think, she was quite insecure. Not in a “creepy” way of turning off guys that she probably could have dated…..but in a way of she probably had “in her dreams” a perfect guy, and well…she never met him. Maybe afraid of guys just wanting her for the fact she was “Debbie Gibson”

I know she was in broadway or associated with theater after her pop-career ended. She composed on the side, and time just got away from her. I don’t think she is “virginal” and she is not a “christian” but I think she was guarded enough to keep a lot of guys away from her. Maybe she had some common sense.

With the huge 1980’s revival (that just will not go away now for the past two decades) she has toured, been on stage again, and people are kind of surprised “Hey…..Debbie Gibson. Hey….she looks pretty good, and she didn’t end up a mess, or tabloid fodder”

She has to be fifty / fifty-one now. She runs a charity, and she loves her fans. I think she is keeping busy and I personally think she made the choice to “not be” a mom a very, very long time ago like a lot of GenXers sis back then. Anyway…workday winding down. A busy week. My admin finally is pronouncing my last name correctly with ease after a month. The office is feeling the weekend…that time of day, under an hour to go….talking about plans, their ungrateful children, their “no good x-husband / wife” and since we’re LA…slogging the famous. Nice warm afternoon outside. Looking forward to picking up some groceries, getting take-out tonight (I treat myself to this on payday). Barber tomorrow. Car wash, and going to drive into Santa Monica to check out a few records shops.

    Anyway

Could all this talk about scantily clad “you go girl” anime and video games….is it related to the “roundhouse kicking girls” the Aaron Clarey speaks of?

You know, in a movie…all movies today….hot gal grabs the gun and instantly whoops a*s on every guy? TV shows as well. I know the recent Star Wars movie(s) had a “thing” about this, or still do. Even when I had a TV, I sometimes liked watching “Law & Order” and some of the women on there would just kick butt on five guys during the arrest scene.

Could this also relate to “fantasy”

I read those Xanth fantasy novels by Piers Anthony in the early / mid 1980’s. Great stuff, but the covers kind of had this look to them. As I got older, maybe I actually thought it was kind of saying “read about this because a gal who looks like this is NEVER going to have anything to do with you”. Might as well be entertained kind of thing

June 2022. Will be there for almost a whole month. London for a week. Manchester for a week, York for five / six days…then to Wales to visit family (ncle, aunt, cousins in Conwy). Return to California.

Will buy some records, some clothing, but this time its gonna be chill. Lots of people watching. Sitting at a street cafe in Soho, reading. Sleeping in. No seeing Rod Stewart in concert. No front row tickets / cocaktail table seating to see “Swing Out Sister” not that extravagant this time. Will go soul dancing in Manchester to a few all-niters. Will dress up for high-gloss meal in Mayfair (probably Indian, the best Indian in the world is in the UK)

In Wales, it will be family, speaking Welsh. Morning tea with the famous castle from their front room window, They speak English but they’re northern Welsh (a bit militant) hence why my mother taught me to speak it, even living in the USA.

It will be suits, polished shoes, parka, shades and a perma grin while I soak it all in. Thanks for asking. Vinyl is going through a HUGE rennaissance right now

Posted in a fit of @ssholery because it touches on various dalrockian themes. Redstate tradcon marries 50+ year old divorcee. Hes described (not by detractors) as a “bonus dad.” She can’t give him any kids of his own. Gavin Rossdale after he divorced Stephani got a 27 year old German supermodel.

Posted really just because this shouldn’t be seen as the norm with 0 pushback and because of the contrast between Rossdale and tradcon and because men aren’t “bonus dads” for women’s use.

        Heres my fave part!
”Abortion is a clear-cut evil. Anyone who honestly seeks “peace on earth, good will toward men” will see this if only he extends it to include women and children. Especially Christians should see this very clearly, for their faith reinforces their natural reason and conscience, a faith that declares that every human being is sacred because he or she is made in the image of God. The fact that some people controvert a position does not in itself make that position intrinsically controversial. People argued for both sides about slavery, racism and genocide too, but that did not make them complex and difficult issues. Moral issues are always terribly complex, said Chesterton—for someone without principles.”
I wish every redpiller was like this MAN!
        Heres my seond fave part!
”I think I have already offended every reader who is not clearly pro-life, and before I begin to argue my case I would like briefly to examine that offense. Though I shall appeal only to reason in the body of my paper, I want to appeal first to an attitude of will because it is to the argument like a frame to a picture. Our will often moves our reason, for good or for ill. “For ill” refers to rationalization, but how can will move reason for good? By the initial attitude of honesty, which is a fanatical and uncompromising love of truth, objective truth.”

I wonder why I like this second part so much?Maybe ”honesty, fanatical&uncomprimising truth” has something to do with it,you think?

It sounds as if Mr. Shelton follows his gonads from one woman to the next. Then he marries them, for some reason. I didn’t realize he’d left his first wife for the young country singer that he left behind to marry Gwen Stefani. Yikes!

One thing seems certain. He is moved far more by how a particular woman makes him feel than her youth. In reality, I’ve actually observed that this is true of most men. I’ve seen them leave young cute women for older, more “experienced” women more than once.

    All good Cameron….

You know you’er old when at the barber (my new one down here) now has to shave with a straight razor the whole back of you head for a fade that makes the bald spot on the top of your head not look like an egg yolk surrounded by hair. Barber calls it “retired rudeboy haircut”

Mexican babrber shop in Burbank. My barber in Fresno reffered me to this guy. Grover is his name. Total Mexican shop. Posters of De La Hoya. Latins with thick pompadours slicked and oiled. The telephone ringing non-stop. “spanglish” being spoken….Spanish drifting into English and then English drifting into Spanish. A faded pinata hanging in the corner. Santana, low-rider soul playing on the stereo. The AMerican flag and Mexican flag hanging proudly on the back wall

“Hey holmes…hey you’re Jason, Jacob told me about you. Consider this your home shop.”

I cracked a joke by my thining hair….Grove replied, “Hey brother, don’t worry about it….you paid some dues. Your earned this! Don’t let these wetbacks here give you a hard time, I can tell right now about four of these homies here are gonna be bald by 35!” Loud laughter from everyone.

Beer offered. Polite decline. Joint being passed around, polite decline. None of the Barbers were drinking or hitting the green I will add.

Lots of handshakes at the end….again reminded “A friend of Jacob, is a friend of mine. He loves you man…like a brother. We were kids together in Fresno. Anytime. This is your shop. Welcome to SO-Cal.”

Paid him, tipped him at 75% and made an appointment for two weeks.

Santa Monica was great, both record shops there are victims of Covid-19. Both are closed for good. The weather there was great, Breast season in full swing here. Every gal young and old was in a low cut top. A good day. Spent about five hours there walking around, got a late lunch (Sushi). Hit the 10 back to downtown LA, swung up on the 100 to Pasadena, and I am home 🙂

I NEVER patronize unisex “hair salons,” only barber shops that cater solely to men. I also do my best to make it known to any women in the shop (i.e., mothers of young boys, wives of guys getting cut), mostly by my demeanor and tenor of conversation with the barbers and other guys present, that they’re in a MEN’S SPACE and that they need to hold their estrogen energy in check.

My ideal barbershop is one that would offer a free shot of whiskey or a bottle of beer to guys waiting to get cut (I actually had a barber a few years ago who distilled his own Apple Jack and would offer shots to any of his customers who wanted one, as well as sell you a Mason jar full of it for a few bucks. Delicious [and potent] stuff!), as well as soda and snacks for the boys. Heck, I’d probably even have them sell cigars, too. Anything to indelibly and unmistakeably mark the space as male.

Agreed Freeriker. I don’t drink anymore, but cold beer was offered. (Bud Light…Mexicans and Bud Light….rolling my eyes, such a stereotype…its cheap), Marijuana is leagl out here, but smoking inside a palce of business probably isn’t. There were no little boys around, no teen boys…and they were not going ‘Bob Marley’ style with joint after joint burning up.

I smoked plenty of green in my time…..since getting clean, that had to go too. I picked up cigarettes again after that hike in 2017. I had quit those for ten years.

I can tell you if Jacob had not referred me to this shop, if I had just walked in, I can tell the answer would have been “Umm, booked all week…..sorry brother”

They do straight razor shaves here as well. Usually on my birthday I treat myself to something like that.

I don’t have a problem with women coming to a mans barber shop ONLY if they are bringing their son(s) in for a haircut. I’ll give props to mom for the fact she brings them to a barber shop instead of a hair salon. Maybe dad is working. Maybe he’s in jail….maybe she’s a single mom…….if she keeps her mouth shut and politely listens in this space, I don’t don’t have a problem. I did see once at a shop in San Jose, a woman began flirting and doing that usla thing and playing the card of “Im a girl who is one of the guys” type of thing.

Female barbers. Vietnamese women working in barber shop are fine. In that culture women barber hair as well as men.

I have been getting my haorcut every two weeks since 1989. I have heard so many stories, had so many barbers and had a lot of fun in barbershops

https://biblicalmanhood.blogspot.com/2010/01/some-thoughts-on-christianity-and-mgtow.html T his part of that post mainly…”A Biblical understanding of MGTOW does not relish isolation from others, not even women. But what it does seek is peace and meaning in the person of Christ. So, when the churches fail, when the women of our culture go after the idols of our day, when those in power grow more tyrannical and corrupt, when men are marginalized and stripped of importance, when misandry flourishes, when society moves further away from God, a man can stand firm and unshaken in Christ (Matthew 7:24-25; Psalm 46). The saying that “Jesus is all you need” has fallen on hard times, probably because it has been used in too many instances to dismiss those who suffer from loneliness. But even so, some of us have at least a partial appreciation of its truth, even though the appreciation has come through many failings. It’s a truth that helps us to not only survive the depersonalized structure of our modern society, but also to thrive. It keeps us from being tools for those with an ungodly agenda.”

That the early church’s views on sexuality “came to mark [a] great divide between Christians and the world” is a grave indictment of the 21st century Church. For not only is there very little distinction between Christians and the world regarding human sexuality anymore, the “divide” is no longer between Christians and the world, but between Christians who hold to traditional biblical sexual ethics and Christians who don’t.

      Jason,

By the time of Electric Youth which was High School for me, I guess I had moved on – I just wasn’t going to get to marry Debbie, LoL.

Out of the Blue was the album for me which was middle school. I didn’t like Tiffany as much who was her rival of sorts.

You know, Britney Spears is about a decade younger so her debut in her late teens was in the late 90s vs late 80s. Her music and image was much more sexualized. I know the 80s were far from perfect but 90s much worse.

I think is was as much Debbie’s look and cuteness that drew me in as the music. A lot of the stuff on Out of the Blue is pretty crappy bubblegum pop.

Belinda Carslile too (I don’t remember the GoGos – just her single albumn). See was super purdy.

    Professor…

Yeah, that Biblical Manhood blog for Chritian MGTOW was WAY…..WAY ahead of everyone else. Light years. His last post is from 2010. I like how he actually used scripture for backup and put his faith over substance of what he felt it should be.

    Hence why it wasn’t popular.

Christain MGTOW now just falls under the greater MGTOW umbrella. And there is a hostility of sorts within MGTOW to professing Christians “You are following Jesus, MGTOW doesn’t follow anyone, so Christians can’t be MGTOW”

As they all chant “Trump! Trump! Trump!”

I can understand why many Christian men are MGTOW, what I can’t understand is why MGTOW is viewing Christian men who fall here (a minority) as something “hostile” to their movement. It might be because many MGTOWs were at one time Christian and were burned badly in the faith. Christian men pay “lip service” to those who are celibate as “the real gift” but these same men are viewed as strange, odd, are not allowed to lead or under much scrutiny and gossip. Many fellow men honestky believe they are gay, or “not real men” for wanting sex 46 hours a day within a 24 hour period. I dealt with this frequently. Complain or need advice?

“You are whining. You need to join a gym. You don’t have enough faith. Just go up and talk to women cause they don’t bite…real men are courageous they take what they want and need. They are masculine”

..contrasted with the same message of

“church is not a place for dating. It is for the worship and singing modern praise songs / its god’s timing not yours. Christianity is suffering, and I know what its like, I went three months without a date when I was 19…it hurt really, really bad.”

Worse yet, many of these men were a approached by and elder, a pastor, a busy-body lady, the youth pastor, the associate pastor with the message of or made into: “leave the women a lone, you are a creep. suffer and burn.”

So many men, celibate by choice or not in a MGTOW sense didn’t fit i, or were not needed in a place of faith….so maybe some of the hostility towards it.

Don’t have the answer and don’t really care. If a man has his faith, he needs to tell off Mr. Bible Study leader, Mrs / Ms Busy-body church lady, and even politely stand up to the Pastor with statements about Paul. Statements about countless men throughout the centuries who were lifelong singles (by choice or not) and frankly ask if he has a place in this church or not. Put it on them. Their actions will show, and he can leave. No man should stay in a place, especially the house of god if he is not needed, or wanted there.

The church wants “good looking young men” or men who are married coming. Single men in general make the church look bad, and thats why pastors have to shame them in a sermon now and then to let all the women know “Hey I am trying to do something about this, and I will feed you itchy ears and tell you women what you want to hear”

John Lennon was “correct” when he said the church will go befoer pop music. Hence the actions inside the church towards any man who doesn’t have nice teeth, isn’t some natural alpha, isn’t that smart and doesn’t have a good career
